The Cardinal's has had a sensational year in 2004 as they sweep both the league and city championships.  It is rare in a competitive league, such as Fossil Park, to have a team to accomplish this type of feat due to the talent that exist throughout the league. When such a team arises it is only fitting to give them the recognition that they deserve.

The Cardinals and the Fossil Park Devil Rays competed, here at Wildwood Field, for the City Championship and the results are in.  The Cardinals took top honors in the tournament and the 'Rays came home with 2nd. place.  Ironically, both teams finished in the same order as regular season play.

In this edition of the "Team News" I will cover a few of the remarkable statistics that has made this team.  With a 24 -0 record it is justified that we give recognition to the team as a whole.  This years championship team, the Cardinals, out hit their opponents 262 to 100 and out scored their opponents 242 to 62.  This is an outstanding offensive performance by a group of kids.  Every player had multiple RBI's with seven players recording double digits.  The top five batters recorded 20 or more RBI's each with Jacob Letzring finishing out the season with 40 RBI's which stands for reason why he was the Tournament Offensive MVP.

Defensively, the Cardinals recorded a 941 fielding percent over the season.  With that type of fielding behind an aggressive ball club like the Cardinals, it will be difficult for any team to overcome them.  On the mound, the Cards used four pitchers throughout the season and the City Tournaments.  These four young men recorded 209 strike outs with our Tournament Defensive MVP, Brock Jensen, creating 91 of those K's.  Collectively, this pitching staff (Brock Jensen, Chris Davis, Mike Lovejoy, and Jacob Letzring) had an astounding 1.23 ERA.

We wish to congratulate the Cardinals on their superb season and to wish well those that go on to represent Fossil Park Youth Baseball in the All-Stars.
